Simon of Cyrene
(first century)
   Gospel Figure.
   Simon was forced by the Roman guard to carry Jesus’s cross before his crucifixion. His sons, Alexander and Rufus, may have been members of the early Church since Simon’s only identifi- cation is as their father. The Cyrenians, an organisation which looks after the homeless, is named after him.
   Mark, Chapter 15.
